The laptop that is operating on battery power will show an alert once it reached a predetermined low battery percentage, then it will execute the low battery action, whether to sleep, hibernate, shut down, or do nothing at all which is the default setting. On Windows 8.1, the low battery level percentage is set at 10%, this means that once the battery reached this low level, the laptop will show a notification about the battery status and take the aforementioned actions. Most of the time, you will not be able to do much anymore once the battery of the laptop has reached this low level that is why it is better if you set the low battery percentage higher so that you have ample of time to save any task you are working on.
