The Hardware Acceleration is the ability for software or applications to utilize a hardware component of the computer like the sound card and video card for performance and better experience. If the video card of your computer, also known as Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), provides hardware acceleration option, applications will be able to use the video card to render graphics smoothly. Applications that have options to utilize hardware acceleration are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and other software that are heavy on graphics. For example, the Google Chrome can utilize the video card when rendering videos on YouTube so that the videos will run smoothly. If the video card of your computer supports hardware acceleration, utilizing the hardware acceleration is a good thing. Since not all video cards support hardware acceleration, even if setting a software to utilize hardware acceleration is useless. Computers today, especially laptops, were designed to accomplish specific purposes like for educational, office work, gaming, and so on. If your video card does not support hardware acceleration, your computer was most likely designed for educational or office work but it will still be able to handle graphics smoothly especially for watching movies or videos on YouTube. There are also times that your computer was designed with a powerful processor already with lots of memory for use that the hardware acceleration was not needed anymore for your video card.
Here are the steps to determine if the video card supports hardware acceleration.
1. Right-click on the START button located on the bottom left corner of the screen and choose CONTROL PANEL option.
2. Click the HARDWARE AND SOUND link if your Control Panel window is in Category view.
3. Click the DISPLAY link.
4. Click the CHANGE DISPLAY SETTINGS on the left pane.
5. Click the ADVANCED SETTINGS link.
6. If the TROUBLESHOOT tab is not present on the video card settings window, this means the video card does not support hardware acceleration.
Here are the steps to determine if the video card supports hardware acceleration.
