You may see grayed out files on your computer, like for example, the "Thumbs.db" file. These grayed out files are actually system files which file attributes are set to "Hidden". The system files are set to be hidden because they are not regular files that you should move nor delete that will cause inoperability of the operating system. In this case, you should set your Windows 8.1 operating system to hide the system files and folders to prevent them from being moved or deleted. The option to be able to hide files with hidden attributes is very good for privacy too. This means that you can have a secret file and hide it.
Here the steps to set the Windows 8.1 not to show hidden files and folders.
1. Right-click on the START button usually located on the bottom left corner of the screen and choose CONTROL PANEL option.
2. Click the pull down menu labeled "View by:" and choose SMALL ICONS option.
3. Click the FOLDER OPTIONS icon.
4. Click the VIEW tab.
5. Click the radio dial labeled "Don't show hidden files, folder, or drives" to mark it.
6. Click OK button.
