The Windows Firewall is part of the security features of the Windows XP SP2 (and higher versions) operating system that blocks malicious software and hackers from attacking your computer through the internet or a network. The firewall can be a combination of hardware and software that filters the incoming data to make sure that they are safe. You can always use the firewall that you prefer, however, you should only have one firewall active on your computer or they will conflict. Therefore, if you will use a different firewall other than the Windows Firewall which is on by default, it is just logical to turn off the Windows Firewall. If in case the other firewall that you were using got corrupted, has expired, or you do not like it anymore; you can then always revert to the Windows Firewall by simply turning it on.
Here are the steps to turn on the Windows Firewall on Windows XP.
1. Click the START button and click CONTROL PANEL option.
2. Click the SECURITY CENTER link. (If your Control Panel is in classic view, look for the SECURITY CENTER icon instead and double-click it.)
3. Click the WINDOWS FIREWALL link.
4. Click the "On (recommended)" radio dial to mark it.
5. Click OK button.
