The Windows Firewall is a bundled security feature of the Windows operating system starting with Windows XP SP2 and it is on by default. It blocks malicious software and hackers from gaining access to the computer through the internet or network. The Windows Firewall of Windows 8.1 has options to turn it on and off for private network and or for public network only. It is alright not to use the Windows Firewall when connecting to the internet as long as you practice safe browsing habit and there may be times that you need to turn it off to troubleshoot some problems like unable to access a specific website or operate a certain application. However, if all is good on the computer, it is best to turn on the firewall because you will never know if when an attack will occur.
Here are the steps to turn on the Windows Firewall on Windows 8.1.
1. Right-click the START button and choose CONTROL PANEL option.

2. Click the SYSTEM AND SECURITY link.

3. Click the WINDOWS FIREWALL link.

4. Click the TURN ON WINDOWS FIREWALL ON OR OFF link that is on the left pane.

5. Click the radio dial labeled "Turn on Windows Firewall" that is under the "Private network settings" category to mark it.

6. Click the radio dial labeled "Turn on Windows Firewall" that is under the "Public network settings" category to mark it.

7. Click OK button.

The Windows Firewall is now on.

Here are the steps to turn on the Windows Firewall on Windows 8.1.
