The Live Tiles on the Start screen of the Windows 8.1 are actively updating while you are connected to the internet to show real time content such as in sports, weather, finance, so forth and so on. In this way, you are up to date to the information that matters to you most. The Windows 8.1 operating system was built with being online all the time in mind that is why there are so many features on it that requires internet connection to access them including the help section. Microsoft developers think that everything will be cloud based which in my opinion will not fully happen because accessing information offline is way more convenient, inexpensive, and more secure. Since Live Tiles needs internet connection to update all the time, this means that they are competing with the other applications that you use for the internet connection bandwidth that will make your internet connection speed really slow. The Live Tiles will also incur you high internet connection fees if you are on a metered data plan or any of the limited internet connection plans. In my case, I have turned off everything that automatically updates like the Skype software so that they will not consume internet connection bandwidth that will slow down my browsing and downloads. In spite of this, I still experienced a very slow internet connection to the point that Google searches takes a minute to show a result, webpages are timing out, and my data meter is still running very fast. I even ran the internet connection troubleshooter of the Windows 8.1 and it cannot find the problem at all. So what I did is I turned off all of the Live Tiles on my Start screen where I found ten of them and the problem was fixed. The Google searches are now popping up in lightning speed and all of the webpages are opening very fast without a problem. Just imagine ten Live Tiles all updating at the same time and coupled with other applications installed on the computer that are also updating will really slow down your internet connection even if you have a high speed unlimited internet connection plan.
Here are the steps to turn off the Live Tiles on the Start screen of the Windows 8.1 to stop them from slowing down the internet connection.
1. Click the START button located on the bottom left corner to open the Start screen.

2. Right-click each icons on the Start screen and click TURN LIVE TILE OFF option if they have it to turn off the active updating.
