The Start menu of the Windows 8.1 covers the whole Desktop and the items are iconized which is very different from the Windows XP. You can also adopt the Desktop background also known as Wallpaper to the Start menu background. If you do this, it will give you an impression that you did not even leave the Desktop when you open the Start menu because they just share the same background picture. It is just like that everything that is on the Desktop minimized and replaced by the Start menu icons, and yes, it is just like having two or three Desktops. The Wallpaper is a decorative feature of the Windows operating system which also consumes system resources but a very important feature nevertheless.
