The screen or lid (which is the monitor) when closed will put the computer into sleep (depending on the default setting) so that it will conserve energy especially if it is running on battery. On the other hand, you can also set the computer to automatically shut down instead when closing the lid and this option is more convenient especially while traveling. The laptop batteries has at least two years of life span and you can prolong their life span by not using the battery if not needed.
