The graphics adapter (video card) is the hardware that is responsible in rendering images in the screen (monitor) and it also uses memory to accomplish this. There are graphics adapter that have their own built in memory modules especially the ones used for high tier gaming like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, etc. These graphics card that have their own memory modules usually comes as a video card that can be plugged onto the motherboard of the computer. Computer motherboards nowadays comes with their own graphics adapter and shares the system memory but cannot be used for high gaming because of technical limitations. If you just use the computer for office work, watching movies, or listening to music, it not necessary anymore to know if how much memory does your graphics adapter have in its disposal because an ordinary graphics adapter can easily handle those. However, if you are into gaming, it is necessary to determine if how much memory your graphics adapter have to know if it meets the system requirements of the game that you want to play.

Here are the steps to determine the amount of memory that the graphics adapter have on Windows 8.1.

1. Right-click on any free area of the desktop view and choose SCREEN RESOLUTION option.


2. Click on the ADVANCED SETTINGS link.


3. Under the "Adapter Information" of the ADAPTER tab, you can now determine the memory properties of the graphics adapter. In this case, the graphics adapter have a total of 1024 MB of memory or equivalent to 1 GB memory.
