The "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" On Windows 8.1

The "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" is an operating system tool of Windows 8.1 to be able to stop any hardware that is connected to the computer while it is on. This tool will make sure that the hardware or media that you want to disconnect from the computer will stop first before you remove it to prevent any data corruption. This tool is usually used when you want to remove USB Flash Drive or other similar storage media. Though you can remove a USB Flash Drive even if you do not stop it first through the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" tool, but this can cause damage to the files stored in it, like if there is a file that is currently open from it, or if there is a file transfer occurring at the time you disconnected it. Therefore, it is always a best practice to stop the hardware or media through the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" tool first before removing it from the computer.

1. Click the icon that looks like an arrow pointing upwards that is in the System Tray of the Windows Taskbar to show the other icons, and then click the USB PLUG icon.

2. Click the hardware or media device that you want to stop.
