Determine Version Of Java Installed On Windows XP

Java is an object oriented programming language which was developed by Sun Microsystems, which is now merged into Oracle Corporation. You need the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed on the computer to be able to run Java developed software, most especially the Java Applets embedded in the webpages. Without the Java installed on the computer, webpages with embedded applets will just show an outline of the box where the applet should appear. Java applets are widely used on the internet most especially on online games. If Java is installed on the computer, you can find if what version you have through the Windows control panel.

1. Click the START button located in the bottom left corner of the screen and click CONTROL PANEL option.

2. Click the SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW link located in the left pane.

3. Locate and double-click the JAVA icon in the right pane.

4. Click the ABOUT... button under the "General" tab of the Java Control Panel window.

5. The About Java window will appear showing the version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed on the computer. In this case, it is Java 7 Standard Edition, or Version 7 Update 5. Click CLOSE button to close About Java window.
