The Windows operating system will usually have a new updated version after a few years that old software might not be able to run on it. Most of the software that were created for the older versions of Windows will work just fine on the Windows 8.1 operating system. In my case, I installed my old favorite Winamp MP3 player on the Windows 8.1 operating system and it worked just fine. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the old software that you have been using for years by installing it on Windows 8.1 because it will work just as great as it was on the old Windows operating system that you have been using it on. This is good news especially for those very useful software where their development has already ended. Just make sure though that you do not install an old 64-bit software on a new 32-bit Windows operating system, which is unlikely will not happen because more often than not, old software that were created for the older versions of Windows operating system are still in 32-bit versions. On the other hand, just in case the old software that you installed on Windows 8.1 is not working as expected, which is a rare case, you can manually tell Windows 8.1 to run the old software to be compatible with it.
Here are the steps to use the compatibility mode to run old software on Windows 8.1 operating system.
1. After installing the old software, which in this case, the Winamp MP3 player, right click on its desktop shortcut icon and choose OPEN FILE LOCATION option.

2. Right-click on the executable file that Windows 8.1 found and choose PROPERTIES option.

3. Click the COMPATIBILITY tab.

4. Click on the check box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" to put a check in it.

5. Click the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" pull down menu and choose the operating system where the old program worked, which in this case, choose WINDOWS XP (SERVICE PACK 2) where this version of Winamp was used on.

6. Click the OK button once done.
