Show Hidden Files & Folders On Windows 8.1

Troubleshooting software sometimes requires replacing and or deleting files especially if you are troubleshooting the operating system itself instead of going through the reinstallation of the whole software. There are times that the software have hidden files that you need to work on and most especially if you will work on the files of the operating system. The reason behind the hiding of some files is to prevent the user from inadvertently deleting them which will cause problems. You can also set a file or folder to be hidden for privacy reason. On Windows operating systems, the option to show the hidden files and folders is separate from the option to show the operating system files, in this way, the user have a safety net when working on important files.

Here are the steps to show hidden files and folders as well as the hidden operating system files on Windows 8.1.

1. Right-click on the START button located on the bottom left corner of the screen and click CONTROL PANEL option. (Or you can hold down the WINDOWS key on the keyboard and hit the letter X key, then hit the letter P key.)


2. Click the APPEARANCE AND PERSONALIZATION category link.


3. Click the SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS link.


4. Scroll down the "Advanced settings:" list until you find both the "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" options.


5. Click the radio dial for "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" option.


6. Click the check box for "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.


7. Click YES button.


8. Click OK button.
